Q:  Do we need a new temperance movement?  Why or why not?

A:  I think that in America more then other countries, we eat more than we need to .  There are countries out there in Africa and other places where people starve to death because they don’t have access to or can’t afford food for themselves and/or their family.  If we could only consume enough food that is needed for us to function for our everyday activities, then the excess food that would be saved can be given to those who need the food more than us.

Q:  Is your -Ism part of a larger movement, starting your own movement, or just your own beliefs?  Why?

A:  I think that my -Ism (perfectionism) is starting my own movement and my own beliefs.  My main core belief - as human beings it is impossible to achieve perfection, but our strive for perfection is what makes us all better people - is an ism that is my own that I started which may become part of a bigger movement.  My -ism is also part of my own beliefs because they’re what I believe in and I think that every individual person has their own beliefs.

Q:  What makes for a good belief statement?

A:  A good belief statement shows that readers what the author really believes.  The statement has many details that support the belief with real facts that the author actually wrote and didn’t copy and paste it from an internet website.  The readers need to believe in the belief and they will when it’s filled with powerful word choice and thought.

Q:  Why was women’s suffrage ever in question?

A:  People used to think in a ‘patriarchy’ sense so that men were considered more important.  The people thought women weren’t smart enough and didn’t have the time enough to take the time to leave their household to vote on the future of our country.  They thought the only thing women were good at were cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the children.  People couldn’t except the fact that humans were humans so they characterized us as ‘men’ and ‘women’; they thought that we were two separate species instead of one.  The men liked and felt comfortable being in control so it was really different to have a different ‘ruler’ in the house.

Q:  What can 10 words do that 10,000 cannot?

A:   10 words can offer a story or merely a sentence with more word choice, voice, fluency than a story or sentence with 10,000 words.  10,000 words can cause a reader to become confused while reading 10 simple words is easy to comprehend.  Having more words is harder to remember but 10 words are easy to keep in your head.

Q:  Is competing at a spelling bee different than competing in a sport?  Why or why not?

A:  I think that competing in a spelling bee can be similar and/or different from competing in a sport.  Both require competitiveness in order to succeed in the game or spell-off.  You have to be dedicated to the sport/spelling and be determined to do well.

But the difference between the two is that spelling uses absolutely no physical contact or ability whereas athletics require  physical ability.  You may see kids sweating in a spelling bee but that’s from nervousness, not by expelling force and strength.

Q:  How will you find your happy place within a CSAP (Colorado Student Assessment Program) prompt?

A:  In order to find my ‘happy place’ during a CSAP prompt, I will try to think of anything that relates to my personal life that also relates to the prompt because I find that I write best when I’m able to think of actual events that I’ve been through.

New Writing Style

February 28th, 2008

For this assignment, I’m going to try the approach of List Blogging for my ‘New Writing Style’.  List blogging is pretty much self-explanitory but in cause you can’t figure out the meaning, list blogging is a type of blogging style where you list up to 10 or more things in a list format.  I’m going to try this out so if this needs some improvement, just send me a comment and some feedback on some things that could make this a better blog post.

Some of my favorite things about summer time:

  • the feeling that when you go home, there’s no homework waiting for you on the table
  • the warm sun tanning (or in my case burning) my skin
  • the skin peeling off of you from a sun burn
  • the cool splash of water from the swimming pool
  • spending time with all my friends without worrying about the stresses of school
  • have sleepovers every weekend and on weekdays without a care in the world
  • making a firepit and roasting marshmellows to make s’mores
  • camping out in the back yard with the chirpping of crickets in your ears
  • feeling the dew-wet grass on your bare feet
  • sweat running down your back and face during a softball game
  • warm summer nights where you can sleep under the stars
  • relaxing at home all day and doing absolutely nothing besides sleeping and changing the TV channel
  • going on some type of adventure weather it’s to Nebraska or some other country
  • sleeping in bed with the windows open
  • eating dinner outside and watching the sunset
  • hiking in the wilderness where you can see no cars or sky-scrapers
  • knowing that you’re home alone and you have the libirty to do almost anything your heart desires

There it is.  Hope you liked it and please leave me any comments about anything you’d like to say about this post!  Thanks!

Darfur Tragedy

February 27th, 2008

Q:  Why has the United Nations called Darfur “one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world”? Who does the article indicate as being responsible for this tragedy?

A:  The United Nations say that, “unlike the tsunami’s that Southeast Asia experienced a few years ago, the Darfur problem is a man-made crisis…”  This conflict has resulted in many  violations of humanitarian rights.  They say this problem should be resolved in a political solution.

The UN also blames the government for the responsibility of the tragedy.  The Janjaweed were the rebels that caused the trouble but they caused the trouble because of inadequate government and governing.

Change

February 27th, 2008

Q:  How does today’s constantly changing world affect/influence your life?  Now?  In the future?

A:  I think that the technology advancements in our lives that are continuing to be even more advanced will allow the world to be more connected and together.  With the Internet and Chat and other tools that we use, we’re able to communicate with others around the world;  we’re able to listen and hear their opinions.  Being able to use computers and to turn on use DVR or TVO on the television advances my life in ways that were unimaginable 15 years ago.  If these tools would be taken away from me and my peers, we wouldn’t know how to access alternate ways of attaining our information.  In the future, I believe that just about everything will be technology-based.  Paper will no longer be a resource because our resources for the paper are running low.  Megabyte and Cyberspace will never run out because the spaces on the Internet are unlimited.  This will revolutionize our economy and world even more in years to come.
